Team NSS promotes careers on the field and off

NSS has been active in employment promotion opportunities recently.

In the first instance, relationships with the Clontarf Foundation in the north have firmed both on NSS facilities and on their own turf, the football field.

The events were organised by Business Support Manager Jade Collins, who said staff were put through their paces.

“The Cairns branch of the Clontarf Foundation got in touch with us to come on site and get briefed on opportunities we offer as North Queensland’s leading integrated import, export and logistics provider.

“We have built similar links with Clontarf Townsville and hosted groups of young men who also peppered us with questions about careers in management, administration, operations and trades.

“It sparks their curiosity and gets them thinking about things that they can do in the future in different industries.

“Also, NSS is conscious of the value of mentoring and developing talent and I think it adds to our employment offer.”

NSS was also prominent at an employment seminar held in Townsville Murray Stadium.

Their booth sparked the curiosity of job seekers, Jade said.

“We fielded a lot of questions on what is stevedoring and then just trying to explain what we do in terms of importing and exporting and some of the different cargoes that we handle.

“But more so some of the roles that are involved in that. The sort of jobs that people don’t think about.

“There are also some traditional roles we’re promoting. Truck drivers are a bit of a dying breed. Historically, it’s the older generation of people that drive trucks.

“So, trying to entice young people to keep trucks moving on the road and that could be a potential career prospect for them. Trying to bridge that generational gap between those roles.”

Later in August, the Clontarf Foundation Townsville branch met with NSS, this time on the Queens Park touch football field where staff were extended to their fitness limits.

The scoreboard showed the Clontarf Foundation Townsville had the upper hand.

It was an effort to both bridge the gap and have a bit of fun, Jade said.
