Steph finds purpose in a job that gives back

Business Support Administrator, Stephanie Cheslett, said Northern Stevedoring Services was a ‘keeper’ job.

Steph’s role as backup for human resources and safety among others, means no day is the same.

She recently represented NSS at the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal sponsor appreciation event in Townsville.

NSS’ donation of $5000 was one of many the company made to the community, Steph said.

The Salvation Army was inspirational organisation she said.

“The talk today gave me a lot of confidence to know that it’s okay to talk about trauma. It’s okay to talk about your feelings and to know you’re not alone in the world.

“It’s great to know that there’s a great company out there (The Salvation Army) that will help support homelessness, violence against women and even men. It’s an incredible gift that they’re giving. And to see so much sponsorship go into it, it’s amazing.”

“I’ve learned to speak-up. Don’t be afraid to talk about your emotions. Don’t be afraid to think that you’re alone in the world. You’re not. There are people here that are happy to sit and have a coffee with you and talk about it or go for a walk, just remember that you’re not alone in the world.

The keynote address by Beaconsfield Mine disaster survivor Todd Russell meant a lot to her, Steph said.

“He talked about how he went through a lot and then he went to hospital and he got sick and he kept going and was stuck in a bed in the hospital for five months and he still continued to go through life every day.

“I think this was the first time they (the organisers) said that they’ve been somewhere where everyone stood up and they applauded him.

“And you can feel the emotion in the room and you can see people wiping tears away of just joy and sadness and it’s incredibly special to see.”

The opportunity for these experiences and for many other reasons Steph will continue contributing to the business for some time to come.
