Queensland firms lead $40m mine project

Two Queensland companies have landed major contracts for the construction of a $40 million heavy vehicle maintenance workshop at the Carmichael coal mine, near Clermont.

Bravus Mining and Resources chief operating officer Mick Crowe said Cairns-based CSF Steel Fabricators had won the tender to fabricate and then freight more than 685 tonnes of structural steel to the mine site.

Once there, it would be used by Hawkins Group to construct a 5700sq m mine industrial area workshop and warehouse, he said.

Hawkins Group general manager and director Alex Currie said the group’s workforce for the project would be drawn from Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, and surrounding towns.

“We’re proud to be working with Bravus Mining and Resources on such an important project and having the support of another local businesses like CSF Industries to deliver the structural steel for Carmichael mine’s new workshop and warehouse certainly helps us,” he said.

“Coal mines like Carmichael have been the cornerstone of our business for over 30 years.”

Mr Crowe said the workshop and warehouse were critical to every diesel fitter working at Carmichael and each of them was critical to keeping the operation’s haul trucks moving.

“So it’s fundamental we get it right and provide them a workspace that is made of the highest quality materials and built to the best standards,” he said.

“That’s what we’re going to get using CSF Steel Fabricators and Hawkins Group on this job.”

Bravus said more than $2 billion had been paid to regional Queensland contractors and businesses since construction began on the Carmichael project in 2019 and the mine entered operations in 2022.
