Not a day to day type of year

Northern Stevedoring Services surpassed expectations on at least two fronts this year.

The first is that we can respond to emerging opportunity.

This is significant because it has been a year when we’ve had to stop, pivot and change direction.

Our stevedores, who are now expert at discharging wind turbine blades for projects, quickly turned their hand to addressing the needs of multiple countries’ armed forces for exercise Talisman Sabre.

At the same time NSS has been discharging and transporting steel for the first time in a long while through Port of Townsville.

The second success of note is that we have handled the new work safely.

When people are taken out of their routine, they need to apply a different approach to both work and safety standards to get different jobs done.

It is a credit to the staff and management that they adapt to new business which is good for NSS and they have done so by applying standards including safety to a high degree.

Business to get busy

“It is a very busy time for NSS as different customers run on different financial years. The Chinese financial year ends  December 31, Japan’s is  March 31 and the US FY ends on September 30.

NSS operates in an international business environment and this is driven home between Christmas and New Year when many clients are trying to get loaded before the end of the Chinese financial year.

It is not unusual for stevedores to be loading lead, copper and zinc right up until midnight.

And then the weather comes in, and when the winds blow, it’s shutters down with all hands on deck.

Thank-you in advance for your commitment.
