Long serving waterfront staff recognised

Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS) was in its pre-teens when the two inaugural inductees into the company Hall of Fame first started work on the lease at the Port of Townsville.

Shane Henaway and Peter Downey were recognised last night (Wed 17Sept25) at the first ever NSS Employee Excellence Awards held at The Ville.

Shane was a man ‘whose story is woven into the very fabric of our wharf and our history,’ said NSS General Manager Mark George in making the presentation.

Shane Henaway

“Shane began his journey with NSS on 14th December 1981. Over the next 41 years, Shane worked his way through the ranks, seeing more come and go than most of us could ever imagine. He finished up in August 2022 as a grade six stevedore, but his impact didn’t end there.

“Shane made a triumphant return in March 2023, this time embracing a new chapter as a Maffi driver in our logistics division. Because legends don’t retire, they just find new ways to keep the wheels turning.

“… He’s been a driving force in our partnership with the Clontarf Foundation, inspiring and mentoring young men, showing them what it means to work hard, give back, and be part of something bigger.”

Shane’s legacy would prove to be an example to all NSS Staff, Mark said.

In introducing the second recipient Mark said, ‘tonight we celebrate not just a career, but a legacy — as we induct another true legend into the NSS Hall of Fame; Peter Downey.’

Peter started work at NSS two days prior to Shane.

Peter Downey

He has recently taken a bow by way of retirement as a grade six stevedore with the compliments of staff and management alike Mark said.

“Pete, you will be missed, not just for your hard work, but for your character, your humour, and your heart.

“Peter has always been a mentor to young stevedores, teaching them the ropes, sharing his wisdom, and — let’s be honest — reminding everyone that the Cowboys will reclaim their 2015 glory one day.”

Peter’s exit marks the end of an era in the ranks of NSS, Mark said.

“The Downeys are waterfront royalty, with Peter’s brother Mick and nephews Gavin and Darryl all forming part of the legendary Townsville waterfront mafia. If you’ve ever wondered who kept the wharf running, just look for a Downey on the roster.

“No matter the weather or the hour, Pete always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He’s the kind of bloke who makes the hard days easier and the good days even better.”
