Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS) is proud to announce a major milestone in our sustainability journey: from 1 January 2026, all NSS-owned and leased facilities are now powered by 100% renewable electricity—including key locations in Townsville and Mackay.
As a significant energy consumer in Queensland, NSS faced a projected 200% increase in energy costs. We explored multiple options, including expanding our existing 99kW solar system and adding battery storage at our Hubert Street site. While technically feasible, these upgrades required substantial capital investment and continued reliance on the grid.
Instead, through a competitive tender process, we secured a new electricity contract with Flo Energy, delivering certified renewable electricity at no additional cost compared to other market offers.
Our Hubert Street site alone consumes over 600MWh annually, with our solar system already generating over 120MWh—covering approximately 20% of our usage. This new contract allows us to meet the remaining demand sustainably, without the financial burden of large infrastructure upgrades.
This transition complements a broader suite of sustainability initiatives, including:
- Full LED lighting upgrades across warehouses and bulk sheds
- Electric forklifts in our Logistics division
- A modern truck fleet with lower emissions than industry averages
- A negative air pressure bulk shed designed to reduce environmental impact
These efforts reflect NSS’s commitment to environmental responsibility and our license to operate. We’re investing in smart, scalable solutions that support our community, shareholders, and customers—delivering a sustainable and cost-effective supply chain.
