Transport industry gets behind funds raiser

The North Queensland transport industry struck a chord with the community on Sunday (25May25) when it stood in support of the fight against childhood cancer.

More than 280 trucks and motorbikes participated in The Convoy for The Cure in Townsville. Convoy’ supports The Cure Starts Now and its work to raise funds for research into Diffuse Instrinsic Pontine Glioma.

The transport industry runs second only to mining with its $164.4 billion or 7.9 percent contribution to Gross Domestic Product (FY21).

Convoy For The Cure 2025. NSS sponsored event of a truck convoy raising much needed money to help kids who have brain cancer. Mark George of NSS received an award for being a main sponsor of the event from Eleni Millios of The Cure Starts Now.

For the second time in consecutive years Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS) was event naming rights sponsor and also convoy leader by virtue of being the highest funds raiser with a tally of more than $41,000 .

The event focuses the considerable weight of the transport industry on a singular issue said NSS general manager Mark George.

“Trucks, bikes and kids. All the things that make hard working truck drivers turn soft. It has all been brought together at The Convoy for the Cure. It blows the stereotypes.

“You can see by the response, they are proud of their industry, proud of their contribution, proud of their community and are ready to put their money where their mouth is to help influence an outcome.

“This is what you get when you focus the combined might of an industry whose individual members are driving different directions servicing multiple industries, businesses and communities.”

Mr George thanked staff, suppliers and the community for their support.

The Convoy stretched to more than 10km as it wound its way through Townsville from Webb Drive The Bohle to Ross Dam Park.
