Generations of contribution by shipping lines

By NSS General Manger Mark George

Over the past 50 years, international shipping lines including CoscoANL, and Kyowa, along with Spliethoff, AAL Shipping, and BBC Chartering, have made significant contributions to the development and expansion of regional Queensland’s economy.

Servicing key ports in Townsville, Mackay, and Gladstone, these lines have facilitated the movement of bulk, break bulk, and containerised cargo, supporting the region’s booming mining and other primary industries.

In the bulk cargo sector, the Port of Gladstone has emerged as one of Australia’s largest export terminals, handling vast volumes of coal, alumina, and bauxite.

Cosco, with its global fleet of bulk carriers, has helped transport these commodities to markets across Asia and beyond.

Likewise, Mackay’s Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point terminals have grown in capacity to serve Queensland’s coal industry, with shipping lines playing a vital role in linking resource-rich regions to global demand.

Break bulk cargo including mining equipment, industrial machinery, vehicles, and agricultural products has also been essential to economic growth. Kyowa has been a long-standing contributor to this trade, particularly in serving Northern Queensland’s project and agricultural cargo needs.

Spliethoff, AAL Shipping, and BBC Chartering, all specialising in heavy-lift and project cargo, have provided critical services for large-scale mining and infrastructure projects. Their vessels regularly deliver transformers, drills, and processing equipment to support development in remote mining and agricultural zones.

Container traffic, led by ANL, has grown steadily, especially through Townsville, the principal container port in Northern Australia.

ANL has supported exports of refined metals, beef, grain, and cotton, while also facilitating the import of manufactured goods, building materials, and foodstuffs.

These operations have been made possible by the expertise and infrastructure of Northern Stevedoring Services (NSS), which provides stevedoring, logistics, warehousing, and quarantine services across Townsville, Mackay, and Gladstone.

Over five decades, NSS has heavily invested in infrastructure to meet growing demand—introducing mobile harbour cranes, expanding hardstand storage areas, and deploying specialised cargo-handling equipment for bulk and project cargo.

Their investment has enabled faster vessel turnaround, improved cargo safety, and streamlined supply chains vital to regional industries.

Together, these shipping lines and the logistics support of NSS have been instrumental in transforming regional Queensland into a dynamic export hub, fuelling long-term economic growth and connecting Queensland’s industries to the world.
